U.S. Bans Fake Online Reviews in October, Civil Penalties Ahead

According to recent reports from international media, an estimated 30% to 40% of online shopping reviews are fake, as assessed by U.S. consumer protection organizations. However, this situation is about to change. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will implement a ban on fake online shopping reviews starting in October, with violators facing civil penalties.

The new FTC regulations are as follows:

1. Users are prohibited from posting fake reviews or endorsements, including those generated by artificial intelligence.

2. Users who have not experienced the product or service are forbidden from leaving reviews.

3. Companies are banned from offering monetary rewards or other forms of compensation for positive or negative reviews.

4. Employees of a company are not allowed to write fake reviews.

5. Companies cannot use legal threats or intimidation to prevent consumers from leaving negative reviews.

6. Deliberate buying or selling of social media accounts is prohibited.

Studies show that approximately 76% of consumers check reviews before making online purchases, and 93% believe that online reviews significantly influence their buying decisions. The introduction of these FTC new regulations aims to create a fairer and more transparent shopping environment for consumers.
