China’s H1 2025 Trade Tops $3 Trillion with Export Surge

China's General Administration of Customs released its official foreign trade figures on July 14, 2025. According to the report, China's total import and export volume reached 21.94 trillion yuan (approximately $3.02 trillion USD) in the first half of the year, marking a 2.9% year-over-year increase. This growth rate is 0.4 percentage points higher than that recorded in the first five months of the year.

Breaking it down, exports totaled 13 trillion yuan, setting a new historical record for the first half of any year with a 7.2% year-over-year increase. Meanwhile, imports reached 8.79 trillion yuan, representing a 2.7% decrease compared to the same period last year—but still showing a 1.1 percentage point improvement over the previous five-month trend.

June Sees Broad Recovery Across Trade Sectors

In June alone, China's total trade value hit 3.85 trillion yuan, up 5.2% year-over-year—the second-highest monthly figure in history. Both exports and imports recorded positive growth, indicating a clear rebound in global trade activity.

June's exports reached 2.34 trillion yuan, up 7.2%, with significant contributions from high-demand products like electronic components and vessels (ships). On the import side, China brought in 1.51 trillion yuan worth of goods, a 2.3% increase, led by strong growth in computer component parts and fresh and dried fruits.

Trade Momentum Strengthens Despite Global Headwinds

Despite a mixed global economic outlook, China's trade performance in the first half of 2025 demonstrates resilience and adaptability. Strong export growth, especially in tech and shipping industries, helped offset weaker import performance and kept the overall momentum upward.
