Amazon Search Trends: How Sellers Find Keywords

More than 60% of consumers begin their online shopping searches on Amazon, according to recent search data published by SmartScout. As the number of shoppers, sellers, and advertising dollars on the platform continues to rise, competition for visibility in Amazon search results is becoming increasingly intense.

For sellers, this makes Amazon search trends more than a simple measure of popularity. When analyzed alongside competition, conversion potential, pricing, seasonality, and sales performance, search behavior can provide valuable insight into emerging consumer demand.

At the same time, effective Amazon keyword research is becoming increasingly important for sellers deciding which products to launch, which listings to optimize, and where to allocate advertising budgets.

Amazon's Expanding Marketplace Is Increasing Search Competition

Amazon reported net sales of $716.9 billion in 2025, representing a 12% year-over-year increase. North American sales reached $426.3 billion, up 10% from the previous year.

Amazon Prime has more than 200 million paid members worldwide, while independent sellers account for more than 60% of sales in Amazon's marketplace. Most of those sellers are small and medium-sized businesses.

Revenue from third-party seller services also continued to increase, reaching $170.1 billion in 2025 compared with $156.1 billion in 2024. Amazon's advertising services revenue rose from $56.2 billion in 2024 to $69.7 billion in 2025.

These figures highlight both the scale of Amazon's marketplace and the increasing competition sellers face for traffic. As more merchants compete for the same shoppers, simply listing a product is no longer enough. Sellers need to understand how consumers search, when demand begins to increase, and which keywords may present realistic opportunities.

Seasonal Events Can Reshape Amazon Search Demand

Seasonality also has a significant impact on consumer search behavior.

U.S. e-commerce sales during the 2025 holiday season reached approximately $254.8 billion, with mobile devices accounting for more than half of holiday online purchases.

During Prime Day 2025, the average order value reached $53.34. Among households that purchased during the event, 63% placed at least two orders. Popular categories included apparel and footwear, household essentials, and home-related products.

These buying patterns show why sellers should monitor Amazon search trends before major shopping events rather than reacting only after demand has already accelerated.

Prime Day, the holiday season, back-to-school shopping, and other major retail periods can significantly change both search volume and purchase behavior. Sellers that identify these changes early may have more time to adjust inventory, optimize listings, and test advertising campaigns before competition becomes more expensive.

High Search Volume Does Not Always Mean High Sales

One of the most important lessons from Amazon search data is that search volume should not be treated as a direct measure of sales.

A keyword may experience rapid growth in search activity before actual sales begin to rise. Similarly, a single product can generate sales through dozens or even hundreds of related search terms.

For this reason, effective Amazon keyword research requires sellers to evaluate more than search volume alone.

Key factors may include:

• Product-market relevance
• Sales velocity
• Consumer purchase intent
• Competitive intensity
• Product pricing
• Review volume
• Advertising activity

A keyword with millions of searches may appear attractive, but it may offer little opportunity if the category is already dominated by established brands and heavily advertised products.

What Were Some of Amazon's Most Popular Search Terms?

According to SmartScout's estimates, "Coffee" was the most searched keyword on Amazon in the United States in 2025, generating approximately 11.22 million searches.

Globally, "iPhone" ranked first with more than 45 million estimated searches, while "Lego" generated approximately 3.39 million searches.

However, the largest keywords do not necessarily represent the best opportunities for third-party sellers.

Instead, sellers may find more accessible opportunities in products associated with those major search terms, such as accessories, replacement parts, bundles, complementary products, or highly specific subcategories.

Rather than competing directly for the most popular keyword, sellers can often identify smaller segments where demand is increasing but competition has not yet fully developed.

How Sellers Can Identify High-Potential Keywords

SmartScout recommends separating keywords into several categories, including rising keywords, validated keywords, and keywords that have limited relevance to the seller's product.

Rising keywords can signal emerging consumer interest, but sellers should still examine how closely the term matches the actual product.

For example, suppose searches for "magnesium gummies" are increasing rapidly.

If a seller offers magnesium capsules, the keyword may have strong search volume but weak product relevance. Adding "magnesium gummies" directly to the listing title could attract shoppers looking for a completely different product format.

If the seller actually sells magnesium gummies, however, the keyword may justify further analysis.

The seller could then evaluate:

• Average selling prices
• Review counts
• Subscription discounts
• Coupon activity
• Number of sponsored listings
• Competitive advertising intensity

Only after reviewing those factors should the seller decide whether the keyword is worth testing.

This approach helps separate genuine market opportunities from search trends that may look attractive but have limited commercial value.

Search Trends Can Support Product Launch Decisions

Search data can also help sellers determine whether a category is worth entering.

A keyword that grows consistently over several weeks or months is generally more meaningful than a sudden search spike that disappears after two weeks.

Sellers should also study the products that currently dominate the search results.

If leading products have relatively few reviews, weak product images, limited differentiation, or inconsistent branding, new sellers may still have an opportunity to enter the category.

By contrast, a category dominated by major brands, thousands of reviews, aggressive promotions, and extensive advertising may be difficult to enter even if search demand remains high.

This is where Amazon keyword research becomes closely connected with product research.

The objective is not simply to find high-volume keywords. It is to identify markets where demand, competition, differentiation, and profitability can support a sustainable product.

Sellers Must Distinguish Seasonal Demand From Short-Term Hype

Not every search spike represents a long-term opportunity.

For example, searches for lunch boxes may increase every summer as families prepare for the back-to-school season. That pattern may repeat consistently each year and can therefore be planned around.

A novelty product that suddenly receives significant attention for two weeks may be very different. Demand could disappear before a seller completes manufacturing, international shipping, and Amazon warehouse replenishment.

That distinction is particularly important for inventory planning.

Ordering large quantities based on temporary search demand could result in excess inventory, higher storage costs, and markdown pressure if consumer interest disappears.

Sellers therefore need to examine the duration and historical pattern of a search trend before committing significant inventory.

Search Trends Are Also Changing Amazon PPC Strategy

Keyword trends can also influence Amazon PPC advertising decisions.

When a keyword is gaining momentum but has not yet become highly competitive, sellers may be able to conduct small advertising tests before bid prices increase.

Keywords with strong purchase intent can initially be tested using exact-match campaigns. Sellers can then use phrase match to explore related search variations and identify additional converting terms.

Search term reports are particularly valuable in this process.

Sellers may discover keywords that are already generating conversions through automatic campaigns or broader keyword targeting but have not yet been added to the product listing or dedicated manual campaigns.

Moving proven search terms into more controlled campaigns may allow sellers to manage bids, placements, and budgets more effectively.

Timing is also important.

If historical data suggests that a category normally reaches peak demand in July, sellers can begin testing relevant keywords before the peak season starts rather than waiting until competitors have already increased their advertising spend.

Early testing allows sellers to gather conversion data while advertising competition may still be relatively manageable.

Turn Keyword Monitoring Into a Monthly Process

Search trend analysis works best when it becomes an ongoing process rather than a one-time research project.

SmartScout recommends regularly monitoring both core categories and adjacent subcategories for rising search terms.

Sellers can organize keywords into several groups:

• Evergreen keywords
• Seasonal keywords
• Brand-related keywords
• Emerging keywords

The next step is to determine whether each keyword matches the product and the shopper's likely purchase intent.

Sellers can then examine competing products by comparing pricing, reviews, product photography, coupons, promotions, and advertising activity.

Based on those findings, listing content can be updated carefully, while high-intent keywords with reasonable competition can be tested through small-scale Amazon PPC advertising campaigns.

Search term reports, competitor launches, sponsored placements, and changes in product rankings should also be monitored continuously.

Most importantly, keyword performance should ultimately be evaluated against real business metrics such as sales revenue, conversion rate, advertising costs, and profit margin.

Search Data Should Never Be Used in Isolation

Amazon search trends are valuable, but they should not be treated as an independent performance indicator.

Data cited by SmartScout shows that sellers using Amazon Product Opportunity Explorer increased gross sales by 1.79% after 12 months.

The finding reinforces a broader principle: search demand becomes more useful when it is combined with competitive analysis, pricing, seasonality, conversion performance, and actual sales results.

A rising keyword may indicate growing consumer interest. It does not automatically mean a seller should launch a new product, increase inventory, or dramatically raise advertising spend.

The strongest opportunities usually appear when several favorable conditions overlap: demand is increasing, product relevance is high, competition remains manageable, and the seller can still achieve an acceptable margin.

Final Takeaway: Find Demand Before the Market Becomes Crowded

The real value of Amazon search trends is not the ability to chase every popular keyword. It is the ability to recognize changes in consumer demand early enough to make better business decisions.

Effective Amazon keyword research requires sellers to look beyond raw search volume and evaluate purchase intent, competitive strength, seasonality, pricing, review barriers, and profitability. The same principle applies to Amazon PPC advertising: early testing can be useful, but advertising decisions should ultimately be supported by conversion and margin data.

For Amazon sellers, timing matters not only in keyword selection and advertising, but also in inventory planning. Identifying a promising product opportunity is only useful if inventory can reach the right fulfillment center before demand peaks.

That is where an experienced logistics partner can support the broader Amazon selling strategy. Forest Shipping is an international freight forwarder that helps businesses ship cargo from China to Amazon warehouses, including Amazon FBA destinations in major global markets. By coordinating international transportation, customs clearance, and delivery planning, Forest Shipping can help sellers align their inventory movement with product launches, seasonal demand, and replenishment schedules.

Ultimately, sustainable growth on Amazon comes from connecting market intelligence with execution. Sellers that identify growing demand early, evaluate competition carefully, test keywords strategically, and position inventory before the market becomes crowded are better prepared to turn search opportunities into actual sales.
