What is Consolidated Freight Shipping Service?

Consolidation freight shipping, commonly called as consolidation, is the process in which the shipments of different shippers are combined into one shipment. It is mostly used where the shipment does not take a whole space in a container during transport for example less than a container load (LCL) or less than a truck load (LTL). Because of this, the smaller consignments are grouped, ensuring that all the space in the carriers is used, reducing the shipping cost.

Advantages of Consolidated Freight Shipping

Cost Efficiency: Finally, the cost of transportation is shared between the shippers, resulting in reduced cost per shipment than if the small consignments were to be shipped.

Space Optimization: It assists in the optimization of space within the containers or trucks and reduces the number of shipments to be conducted.

Environmental Impact: This means that there are fewer ships in the sea or fewer cars on the road thus reducing the emissions of carbon.

Flexibility: Suits firms that have fewer goods or inventory that would require them to fill an entire container or truck.

Coordination: This is another process that involves coordinating and timing of the shipments and this is often done by the freight forwarders or logistics providers.

The Procedure Of Consolidated Freight Shipping

Collection: Smaller shipments from many consignors are sorted and concentrated at a certain location, which is a warehouse or a freight station more often.

Sorting and Grouping: It is delivered to various places based on the category of the merchandise.

Packing: The grouped shipments are then placed into one container or in one truck so that there will not be any space that will go unfilled.

Transportation: The shipment is then taken to the destination where it is sorted and then the individual shipments are then delivered to the intended consignees.

Delivery: At the destination, the shipment is removed from the consolidating container, sorted, and then shipped to the consignee.

This method is most useful in the case of overseas transport because transportation costs are generally high in this case due to the large distance.
