March 2025 Ocean Freight Rates & Market Analysis Update

March Ocean Freight Rate Trends

1. U.S. to Canada Ocean Freight:

Freight rates are expected to continue declining until mid-March. Shipping lines are planning rate increases in the second half of March, but current market conditions make such increases difficult to sustain.

2. Northwest Europe Full Container Load Freight:

Rates are valid through mid-March. After initial rate hikes at the start of the month, shipping lines have adjusted rates downward. Current prices show an effective increase of USD 300 per 40-foot high-cube (40HQ) container compared to February’s lowest rates.

3. China HEDE Ocean Freight to Los Angeles Port:

This week, spot rates for shipments from China to Los Angeles remain at USD 3,500/40HQ for premium space bookings, and USD 2,500/40HQ for general space bookings.

The Shanghai direct sailing on the HDX service departs on Thursdays and takes 13 days. Upcoming estimated time of departure (ETD) from Shanghai: 3/9, 3/13; ETD from Huanghua: 3/10.

March First-Half Ocean Freight Rate Updates:

1. U.S. West Coast Routes: Rates are approximately USD 2,400–2,500/40HQ for OA group members. Some shipping lines offer special rates at USD 2,000–2,100/40HQ.

2. U.S. East Coast Routes: Rates are approximately USD 3,400–3,600/40HQ for OA group members. Other carriers have rates ranging from USD 3,000–3,300/40HQ.

3. Canada Routes: Rates to Vancouver range from USD 2,450–2,500/40HQ, while rates to Toronto/Montreal are around USD 4,950–5,100/40HQ for OA group members.

2. U.S. East Coast/Gulf Coast Ports:
After the holiday season, capacity is stable, and the market supply-demand balance remains steady.

3. U.S. Southwest Ports:
Post-holiday capacity remains ample, with supply and demand balanced.

4. Canada:
Intermittent blank sailings persist. Post-holiday capacity is sufficient, and backhaul capacity is gradually recovering. Although rail capacity to Calgary is still limited, transit times for containers transferred to rail for other destinations have improved slightly.

5. Europe Routes:
Capacity is moderate. Due to the Red Sea situation, most shipping lines have rerouted services around the Cape of Good Hope, extending single-trip transit times by 7–10 days.

6. Australia Routes:
Rates continued to drop through the end of February. Capacity is steady, and transit times have largely returned to normal.

Tips:

• For shipments on the U.S. East Coast, Forest Shipping’s all-water consolidated cargo typically follows the Panama Canal route, which currently has favorable conditions.
• U.S. East Coast blank sailings are ongoing. Sellers with tight transit time requirements should plan shipments early.
• Various shipping lines, including Matson, ZIM, and COSCO, offer rapid transit options from Chinese ports to New York via U.S. West Coast ports and rail connections.
