Amazon Updates FBA Returns: New Damaged Inventory Ownership

Amazon has updated its FBA returns evaluation policy and introduced a new setting called “Damaged Inventory Ownership.” This option directly affects how sellers are reimbursed when units are damaged during storage, handling, or fulfillment by Amazon.
Where to Find the Setting
In Seller Central, go to:
Settings → Fulfillment by Amazon → FBA Returns Evaluation and Ownership Settings → Damaged Inventory Ownership.
Default Option (Recommended for Most Sellers)
By default, the selection is “Allow Amazon to own all ASINs.”
With this enabled, if items are damaged while in Amazon's custody (e.g., at a fulfillment center or during outbound handling), Amazon will automatically reimburse you. No extra documentation is required from the seller.
Other Options and What They Mean
- Allow some ASINs
You can upload a list of specific ASINs for which Amazon may take ownership upon damage. This gives brand owners or select listings more control, but requires active list management.
- Disallow any ASINs
Choosing this means you decline reimbursement for damage caused while Amazon is handling your inventory. You would absorb those losses yourself. This is a high-risk choice and generally not advisable.
Practical Guidance
- Keep the default unless you have a strong, documented reason not to. For the vast majority of sellers, allowing Amazon ownership preserves reimbursement rights and reduces operational friction.
- Brand owners who need granular control can consider “Allow some ASINs,” but keep the list current.
- Avoid “Disallow any ASINs.” It effectively opts you out of compensation for Amazon-caused damage.
If you previously modified these settings, review and correct them now to prevent avoidable losses.
